EDUCATION

September was indeed a cracker of a month in terms of the amount of wonderful learning sessions hosted by the IIWC for their members with plenty of learning, expanding of horizons, and Continuous Professional Development taking points along the way!

We kicked off with an excellent session themed around the role the short-term insurance industry plays in the economy, generously sponsored by Sasria Insurance. Speakers included Muzi Dladla, Executive Manager: Stakeholder Management at Sasria, whose presentation was found to be so captivating, talking about Sasria in general and touching on the recent unrests in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. He was followed by Ian Kettlety from Indwe Risk Services, expertly touching on the role the Short-Term Insurance industry plays in the economy. Simon Freemantle from the Standard Bank Group was the last speaker, delivering a strong presentation unpacking, amongst other things, the recent unrest as well as some key upcoming risks and events. We received some truly delightful feedback from our attendees.

Only a week later we were privileged to hear from the Deputy Commissioner at the FSCA, Ms Astrid Ludin, in a very special session, sponsored by the IIWC. Ms Ludin was able to give us a brief look into the FSCA (sharing amongst other things on what keeps them awake), insight into their perspective on market conduct as well as what to expect on the regulatory front. All those attending benefited greatly from receiving some of these important updates.

The 15th of September saw a Business Interruption Classroom session kindly sponsored by Hollard Insure & presented by Nico Venter from Hollard Insure as well as the very knowledgeable & experienced Rob Hepple from Lloyd Warwick International South Africa. The first section was a basic introduction to BI and a recap of last year’s BI Session in September, for those who did not attend, followed by a more in-depth impartation of perspective and challenges often faced around BI from a Loss Adjuster’s point of view. Everyone would have walked away having learned something new around BI and with renewed confidence to add value to their clients in some way.

The last Webinar for September, took place on the 22nd and was a professional and informative session, generously sponsored by Camargue Underwriting Managers. Jennifer Porteous from Camargue started the session with a very comprehensive crash course in FAIS General Code of Conduct & POPIA, followed by Daniel Kidd from Everinghams Attorneys, giving the delegates a captivating back-to-basics talk on Risk Management. The number of questions and comments was testimony to the amount of learning that was happening!

Oh, what a month: Truly a September to Remember!

PS: do look out for our last 2 upcoming Webinars and 1 Classroom session for 2021!
